Logic found their answer in the Stereolabs ZED X camera and corresponding software suite. The system provided exactly what they needed.
"Using the Stereolabs system, we were able to hit the ground running with visual SLAM odometry, and April tag based global pose estimation. These two techniques form an integral part of our strategy for handling indoor navigation in a dynamic environment," says Ginoya. "Furthermore, we are exploring the use of the cameras to detect objects such as fallen boxes, unintended obstacles and human personnel."
Before selecting Stereolabs, Logic conducted extensive testing of alternative solutions to find the best fit for their demanding requirements.
"Prior to using the Stereolabs ZED X camera, we tested a variety of different cameras (OAKD, HAWK, etc.) and strategies (floor pointed cameras, dead-reckoning etc.) for localizing our mobile robot in an indoor, relatively dynamic environment," explains Michael Santora, CEO of Logic.
"As is done often on our team: one of the main evaluation criteria when selecting this new sensor-suite was 'ease at which we could get to a first proof-of-concept.' We found three aspects that really pulled our technical team towards the Stereolabs products: comprehensive & open source implementation of software packages, clear documentation, and active and supportive team. Out of all solutions we tested, we found that the Stereolabs suite allowed for quickest iteration time."
The impact on Logic's business has been substantial. The ability to confidently perform motion commands and send accurate pose updates to Logic's mission planning system proved crucial to operating a connected and fully observable supply chain.

"We have a robotic picking solution that we call the Octopus: a gantry crane with multiple picking arms, configured to a customer's specific workflow," describes Ginoya. "Whereas for our mobile pallet robot, the largest challenge was with indoor navigation, the challenge here will be one of accurate object detection. The Octopus' multiple arms will get commands from Logic's mission planner to pick and place items from and to multiple pallet robots that have lined up underneath. For this to occur at an effective pace, each arm will need the ability to recognize items from the stack and provide relative pose feedback to the controller."

"We think the Stereolabs camera suite will once again play a role in this project," Ginoya confirms.
