Honda’s autonomous work vehicle (AWV) uses the ZED stereo camera

With the ZED, a 3D stereoscopic RGB-D camera, the Honda’s autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV) can navigate complex obstacles with ease.

THE MODERN AUTOMOTIVE era began with a competition. In the early 1890s there. Le Petit Journal, a French newspaper with a knack for publicity stunts, decided to hold a contest to discover the best method of propulsion: steam, electricity, or petrol engine. The technology needed to get vehicles to drive themselves has not yet been perfected, but it has improved enormously over the past decade and is on the verge of working reliably, at least in relatively simple environments with good weather.

The company, Stereolabs’ is at the forefront with its ZED sensors which enable autonomous vehicles to navigate the complex elements present on the road with its Stereovision cameras.

The Honda AWV is an all-electric, four-wheel drive developed by Honda Research institute deployed predominantly on the construction sites so as to cut down travel time between multiple sites increasing the effectiveness and efficiency.

Building a vehicle that can drive itself on ordinary roads is—along with getting computers to conduct plausible conversations—one of the grand ambitions of modern AI. The ZED2, 3D stereoscopic RGB-D camera is the forward-facing camera on board, along with other sensors for allowing the AWV to easily navigate around the obstacles on the road. The car is designed to drive through traffic and light snow, handling four-way stops, traffic lights, and pedestrian crossings with aplomb.
